Set Free ministries is asking for our help in rounding up christmas gifts for 20 kids from families in the Las Vegas community who are in need. If you would like to participate we ask that the you please bring unwrapped gifts creative, constructive, fun ones! There are boys and girls toys needed, whose ages range from 1-12yrs old. If you decide you want to donate more than one thing, we ask that you make it socks or something of the like (warm x-mas feet).

Bring any and all donations on Sunday the 10^th or Sunday the 17^th to

Anna Francesca energeticly took over as co-host after Liz Q's departure in october of last year. Anna you've done an awesome job and way surpassed any and all expectations and i wouldn't have had a better choice! Your poetry and personality(are they really seperate?) gave wordsculptures an awesome inviting energy that will be missed. Like Liz could not you cannot be replaced. Good luck with school, and congratulations on your recent marriage! We know you'll be seen so things aren't too bad, but goodbyes are tough. Cheers to Good times!

Hey what's happenin? I hope all is well for the moment with everyone, Anna was sick this last week and the prior week i was sick as well(co-hosting is so functional!) so if you missed us we were home in our comfortable beds sweating out one of a million viruses going around at the moment. This week we had a lot of new mouths that were accompanied by eyes and a head, spilling the alphabet soup of their souls to blank walls and wired eyes. I had a great time, so thank you all for the energy that was present at the reading. Energies and such things aside, the words also seemed to be quite on point all around, funny to thoughtful, to tense, to plain wrong there was a healthy dose of what makes open mics so great: Diversity.

I'd like to take this cyber-opportunity to remind everyone that, based on feedback surveys, we have reinstated "assignments." These are just prompts to get your creative juices flowing. Should you choose to accept this mission, the prompts for this week are:

Thank you for taking on this.....i dunno whether to call it a responsibility because that seems too heavy a word for the times we experience evolving before our eyes every Sunday. Well anyway thanks Anna!
Thank you to all the people who filled out the "questionaires", your feedback is welcomed and needed to keep the focus where it belongs, on the autonomous collective! Anna and I looked them over and it was awesome to hear some people vent and cast there thoughts on the future of open mic.

New Year, great selections

Hey wow it's a new year and i feel the same as i did yesterday, but looking forward to what the next year will bring. I want to take a minute to give a huge plug to The Artists Coven open mic hosted by Rachel and Tiesha. The AC is held atthe Olive hooka lounge on Sunset between Sandhill and Annie Oakley. Every Wednesday night at 7 pm these ladies are hosting a great evening of poetry, music, and even some performance art. Get there early if you want a seat because it fills up quick! The staff seems a little overburdened and not really sure how to handle the influx of business, but despite this the reading is a lot of fun and draws a different crowd. The food is great, the hookas are hookas, the vibe is open and welcoming. A lot of good things will be happening at this place this year so check it out when you get a chance. Thanks ladies for your hard work.

Something else to look out for is DAKWNB's free poetry reading at Sonny's gold coin (tropicana and decatur) starting Friday Jan.6th!

No reading this evening for us (1st) but we will start back up next week.

I love how all of a sudden i'm getting stupid advertisements in my comment boxes! Do companies draw any lines whatsoever? I'm not surprised if the answer is no, but still sickened with the hard truth of the matter. I hope you're all well out there in this crazy place we call home, and beyond. It just blew me away! maybe i'm naive when it comes to these things or maybe i just have hope......and you know what hope is not a bad thing. Elizabeth we will miss you soo much!!!!!

We've come to a day that is sad for me as the co-host of word sculptures. Elizabeth Quinones is "passing the torch" and after next week will no longer be hosting by my side. We initiated this weekly gathering over a year ago and have seen so many people come through from so many backrounds, it's been a great eye opening and needless to say inspirational experience. With all things, change is inevitable but the reading willl never be the same. Liz I will miss you sooooooo much. No one can fill you're shoes, but no one should really try, we can only shift with the change and allow room for new shoes, and do something different. This isn't meant to be a set in stone process, and is meant to be an organism of community that changes shape and faces with the set purpose of helping others express themselves and d3veloping communication, and so we watch it do so. This aint bad im just sad, did i say that enough yet? Seasons change so with whatever you do always know you helped found something great. You helped me and covered my ass on so many occassions i can't even recall. You will be missed so much!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! i can't say enough. Thank you for being a founding part of Word Sculptures, (((((SIGH))))) What a lovely beast it is......I'll probably have more to say later, but for now ......WE (I) will miss you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Perhaps you're asking yourself (probably not) "I wonder what Jeff does outside of poetry during the week?" I'm a Grease Monkey, or affectionately known as 'Filter Technician'. I collect grimy grease filters all day, replace them with shiny new ones, and bring them to a compound where they are soaked in a vat of caustic soap and boiling water! here's a sample of what that water looks like.

Oh how it makes me think of........a lot of things .

It's the first of the month. okay, and? Well That means that this is October first. We have a feature up and coming with a regular attendee of Word Sculptures(as well as other readings) Jorge Santiago!!! I will confirm the date and will post that ASAP. umm that's it really, just wanted to drop a few lines in here to say hello and share a lovely little image.

WOW! What a night! 26 readers in all! From people who just walked in the door for the first time, to those of you who have been hangin out from the start! The cake was bomb diggity, the ba---a?(still can't say it) that tommy coe's mum made, supperb, and the drawing was fun, though there were so many people i wish we could have given more! Thank you all for making it a really special night, one that won't be forgotten. People said some really nice things about the reading, and our hosting, and we are just glad you all can share the experience(my cheeks are red with cranberry excitement). We have a lot to look forward to in the next year God willing, and poets willing. WOOO_HOOO!!!!!! I hope no one has lasting heart problems after the balloons i popped, but hey keeping people on there toes and hijacking peoples attention spans is what hosting is half about.

Poet and author Mark Anthony Thomas. I got a chance to see a portion of his performance(check out the link) and am excited to say he will be joining us for an evening of music and poetry!!! Definitely some spicy down south flavor for one and all!!!!

His latest book, 'The Poetic Repercussion: A Poetic & Musical Narrative" has appeared on recommended book lists by Black Entertainment Television (BET), Rolling Out Weekly, and earned him a nomination for the 41st Annual Georgia Author of the Year Awards-Poetry. HAPPY BIRTHDAY !!!!!! ONE YEAR !!!!

A very happy birthday to all of you who have contributed to the vibe and art that we enjoy once a week at Word Sculptures. There have been a lot of people who have come, gone, come back, or walked in and walked right out, but all have been part of this in a big way! There are people who i don't think have missed a sunday since this began(not even as hosts have we done that!) so thank you for your dedication! I didn't want to just sit and write a bunch of thankyou's out again, but We want you all to know We apreciate the time we spend with everyone at the reading, and reflecting on all the things that have gone on around us(everyone)and through us all Im just giddy and thankful for it all! It's really been a learning experience for Elizabeth and I both. THANK YOU!!!!!!

Okay so a year has past, and we've had one major move, which i think was one of the best things to happen, though it doesn't matter where we gather it just matters that we gather somewhere ( i do want to thank starbucks for their space, even if they aren't really interested in art so much as profit). So what will happen in the next year? Well it doesn't matter. This is what it is. People getting together under one roof to share their creativity, listen to others, or just enjoy the ambience of the cafe with a little backround noise. We are not a crew, a membership based orginization, a click or exclusive elite bunch. We are simply people loosely connected through art, sometimes things end, sometimes things last a long time, or just change(as though i even have to say such a cliche) but what matters most is that because of YOU ALL Elizabeth and myself can look back on this year and just smile, and I couldn't ask for anything better than that. I thank God for bringing us all together.

Yep it means that the sky will be smiling down on us all through the night! So this brings me to an assignment

Write a piece about the heavens, the sky, the night , the moon, something around these themes.....This is the suggestion, so run with it in any way you can, twist it out like a small wet rag
or do whatever it is you want to do with it. And if you can bring it to the reading sunday!

A Day late but not a second too soon, HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thank you for everything you've done to make the reading what it is. It would'nt be the same without your delicate yet paradoxically chaotic silliness to freshen up the evenings! I'm so thankful for you and all the words you've inspired me with all these years!

Another recollection of ROMA & COPIOH(w/ an H? i forgot):
words that drift through the atmosphere delicately......among cigarette smoke and coffee aroma......who is this voice....... who is behind it all? The voice of a young girl dressed in vintage elegance.......Elizabeth. And always at these readings , among course linguistics, Gothic ranting, Ravers raving, misfits clinging to each others pain and experience, she was ethereal, the air that floats above the carbon monoxide chaos......that was you before the first hello. And still i hold that perception of you like a flower growing out of the crack in the asphalt in the middle of the median crushed between a 16 lane freeway! Thanks to God we became friends and the flower you are stays in perpetual bloom. Much love and peace i send out to you. Thank you for being my friend and an inspiration.

A POEM ABOUT ME?

A poem about me?
I don't think i want to see
let alone hear what comes of this.
It was assigned not at my request
nor was it an interest of mine.
Oh vanity!
So here i am so let's just speak of you,
YOU who support one another through listening
or just existing in a small caffeinated space
A pat on your back this is intended to be
A THANK YOU ALL from me
for setting thought free to romp where it may

Look around
these nights are yours
the same as they are mine
and you all inspire me even those i havent heard

So no poems about me only thoughts set free by you
and a poem quickly
plainly not trying too hard
just saying thank you
We're from many different backrounds
different ages
Life at different stages
some of us can relate
some of us only state inspired truths
not a moment too late
We demonstrate
unity through creative diversity

ODE TO A KIEWEL

Well in this transient place it seems we would be accustomed (those of us who have been here a little while) to watching people come and go. In fact I think one of the most repeated phrases here is goodbye. Perhaps this explains people saying they "can't get close to people like i did back home" or "the relationships i have here are so shallow in comparison to elsewhere", we just don't get the time! It doesn't matter what causes this to be true because regardless, there are people you are just straight ahead no doubt about it going to miss.

In this small poetry community we find yet another poet/writer/performer/Las Vegas slam team member/DAMNIT JUST GOOD HUMAN BEING, MICHAEL KIEWEL is leaving Las Vegas(do not insert sheryl crow here).

We were lucky enough to watch his last impromptu performance in vegas go down right between our walls (and the walls did shake i swear!) this last sunday night! It was fantastic with work spanning from old classics to new, delectible performances.

I remember seeing this large ball of energy back when ROMA was alive and kickin'. An unfocused mass of talent and humor, in love with hip hop and the art of the spoken word. Back then it was like staring into the hole of a big dormant volcano.......you looked on and said, "Well? Do you think it's just your average seismic angst shaking the land, or is this thing gonna explode?!" and sure enough it was he grew and suddenly we all saw he was as active as St Helens herself. Mikes freestyles have always been the cap at the end of his sets. Like a disciplined student, always looking for a challenge from his peers, a chance to strengthen his lyrical skill, asking (in true hip hop fashion) members from the audience to call out "any words you want to hear me use in a freestyle. I'll do my best". Those freestyles, that flowed some evenings and froze up others(like any performance that is honest), were always inspirational. Strengthened his style and ability has, and this poet has forged his own path through Vegas, that won't be forgotten at any of the places whos ambience he STOMPED through. Now he is for a while taking his spoken word to a new place, ARIZONA, to stomp out a new path there.

MIKE will be missed.

Well now wait, let's be real, we live in Las Vegas........and i think we all know what happens to all who have at one time or another called this place home. Our most often repeated phrase in the midst of these inevitable departures is not so much goodbye but what always follows, the even more inevitable, "YOU'LL BE BACK!"! Deny it if you will Mr Keiwel, but we live in the black hole of the world.

Re Assesing the cliche

What are we doing aside from going through the motions? And if going through the motions is what we do best, then how do we create in our every day lives a forward motion that is beneficial to ourselves and those around us? The cliche of "going through the motions" is brought up a lot in this society along with a hundered other phrases that imply or state bluntly that we are no longer operating as living things whose emotions and thoughts are being stimulated by our interactions. We have been led to believe that when we clock-in to the workplace that we check our personality at the door, or slip on the consumer friendly disguise that is not offensive nor thought provoking, over what is truly there beneath. Sure your eye color remains the same, but the light behind those eyes dim. Many of us dream of living spontaneously and wildly, sipping life from every sweet and bittersweet interaction going out on "the road" or living out every dream we have had since birth. We see the world turning feel the winds of change whistling around us, but feel unchanged(or at least unchanged for the better). So many times in my own life I am feeling as though i need to act on injustice that i see in life, or travel an avenue i desire to explore but find myself repeating the same tired scene the next day left unchanged. It seems we are powerless, unequipped, or simply lacking a starting point to even attempt to live fruitful positive lives, that we are in fact to always slip on our "uniform" and become what we are not: Machines.
Is it true ? are we destined to play out this act AGAIN? Doesn't the apathy of the masses come from a feeling of helplessness, or perhaps today this is simply replaced with CONVENIENCE and COMFORT. A combination of both i suspect. Where does it even begin?!!! We start perhaps by simply changing our attitude towards others, asking those around us what they think, feed them something to get emotional about, push the buttons that they react to outside of the workplace. We are told "dont talk about religion or politics in the workplace". WHY? BECAUSE IT STIMULATES! What is politics, what is religion? LABELS FOR AREAS OF THOUGHT ABOUT LIFE. What could we then translate this doublespeak into? "dont talk about life while you are in the workplace" AS THOUGH THEY ARE SEPERATE!!!! " One day we will be replaced by machines" NO ONE DAY WE WILL BE THE MACHINES. It is not black and white. We need to stimulate each other and challenge each other out of love and an earnest desire to learn! Asking the next person who aproaches the register how their day is going AND MAKE YOURSELF MEAN IT, STOP FOR THAT INSTANT WITH THAT HUMAN NO MATTER HOW LONG A LINE NO MATTER THE IRRATE IN A HURRY PERSON BEHIND THEM "needs to get to work" . Be ready for replies such as "I feel like i could kill someone", and replying something like" why?". dig a little and you could unearth something in that personb that they have long forgotten they had.
I guess what i'm getting at is using the circumstance we are in to stimulate one another. These motions perhaps can't be stopped but their direction can be altered, and that direction is under your control. If you become an archeologist and dig and take a minute to say " hey i really am curiose as to how you are doing in life?"(see even something so simple as completely rephrasing the typical "hows it going "can be a start) you could unearth the diamonds of friendship, or you could unearth the key to universal human communication and caring.One interaction at a time.
So we have the power to change, we have the equiptment(our eyes our ears, our hearts) and we have a starting point(the next person you communicate with). I won't stay away from cliches i will transform what is cliche into an experiment, We will tranform it into something useful, we will no longer beleive the implication that "going through the motions" means becoming more machine like. This small begining(one of many possible beginings) can spark the change we want to see happen globally. YOU MATTER I MATTER AND THE IGNORANT MATTER WE PLANT SEEDS IN THE HEADS OF THOSE WHO DONT UNDERSTAND THE POINT IS NOT TO CONVINCE BUT TO DUST OFF UNCOVER OR INQUIRE SO THAT THOUGHT WILL EVENTUALLY GIVE BIRTH TO AWAKENING< AWAKENING TO ACTION AND ACTION TO CHANGE.
(we also often confuse ourselves with beingat the top of this process as though we cant be shown anything else, this is no the triangle we are consantly being shown, this is life and we are ignorant in one area or another we have yet to realise until someone plants a seed in us, so be receptive and not proud, we are all equally fragile creatures and we are all human beings underneath depite what we've been taught or have seen.)

"whatever you do may seem insignificant but it is most important that you do it"
"love your neighbbor as yourself"
"life is more than food, the body more than clothes'
"with man it is impossible but not with God; with God all things are possible"
if my thoughts are a bit jumbled and scattered its because like a lot of things this hit me and i needed to bleed it out quickly, consider it that is all that i ask. Question it, add to it, challenge it, i need it too.....

Last week we had some new readers, and some new faces, who we will be looking forward to seeing this upcoming weekend, and we switched up the routine (wich is always good) and went to Ichabods Tavern "after-words" and we had a lot of fun! the food there was amazing, the drinks were priced decently, and there were tables that we could all gather around as a big group, it didn't feel as fragmented as it sometimes does. But we still love cheers, and pool so........

Looking toward next week in anticipation as we get comfortable in our new home. From the great Baristas (thanx Sarah and Adam), the fluxuating art on the walls, and the good coffee to the Support of the owners, and the in house sound system, I see great things to come as this is only the setting of the stage. Thanks to all who make this evening possible, and i must give my own personal thanks to GOD who i believe wholeheartedly brings all these elements together.

GUERILLA POETRY!!!!!!!

SO we are all feeling the heat of the sun more and more with every passing day, and with those days of summer approaching many people are retreating in dread to their air conditioned apartments to attach themselves to computers, or televisions. NOT US!!!!!!Well with 2 million tourists from around the world here every weekend walking the strip, I think it's time for a guerilla poetry excursion.....That's right guerilla Poetry, the act of reciting thought provoking poetry in random places on the strip, forcing people to break their glazed reverence for the superficial Casino industry and put beautiful creative expression in their faces! YES STREET PERFORMANCE IS ILLEGAL But why? Because it might keep people out of the casinos or frighten tourists, well I (Jeff) am putting together a group of people interested in giving people from around the country a view of what Vegas Really has to offer illegal or not. So Poets who have a loud voice and want to scream into the open air on the strip, contact me and a date will be set for our first outing.

The Ampitheatre?Behind what building?

That Huge ugly building in front of the college, the one that was built in the late 70s(?) the ampitheatre is directly behind that. hmmmm There is a long central park area that runs parralell to maryland parkway, not far from it either, if you were at the 7-11 at Harmon and Maryland and walked straight into the campus, it opens up into this center park. You would then go Left and follow the path until you see the ampitheatre(outdoor, no roof,just stone amidst grass nothing fancy, by 6:30 people will be there). Hope this helps.....

SO inIn a bad move for winning the respect of at least a few in the las vegas poetry community, inching itself one inch closer to being a not so hideous numb selfi worshipping corporate entity, WORD SCULPTURES one of the few weekly open mic poetry readings in southern Nevada was ejected after 9 months of residency over a single obscenity complaint lodged early this month by a customer.
So once again we see that corporate and culture are not cohesive, they are like Magnets of opposite polarities. When the Beast gets its fingers on culture it becomes merely product, to be sold for profit, not of the creators of product but to the OWNERS of the product . So we will now be doing what we feel is right and moving into an indie coffe shop(also one of the few)and rockin the roof.....THE POETS OF LAS VEGAS WONT BE SILENCED BY CIRCUMSTANCE<>

New Flava on the Way in May!!!!

Hellllooooo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
We are happily entering about our eighth month as a functioning loveable family unit!
wait perhaps im taking things a bit far with the "family unit" thing, but you all are quite like family to us and we apreciate you guys supporting each other as well as us by coming out, whether it be every week, every month or once in your lifetime! No matter which way your cookie crumbles, you are welcome.........so now that, like i said, we are in our eighth month(give or take i don't feel like pinning down an exact number it doesnt matter till a year) we (Liz and myself) have decided to bring you a little flava for the month of may.........."hmmmm, what does he mean by flava, and why isnt he being grammatically correct?" We will be welcoming a fantastic local poet into the word sculpture arena to unleash his fury and beauty onto us all..............This will be our first "feature" poet and it certainly wo'nt be the last as we are currently in negotiations with some of the top world leaders to escalate the war on terror to mythical proportions, bringing the final chapter finally to a close!!!!!!!!! oh and because we have confirmation on several features for ya ears and minds lined up already.

I wrote this before i got EVERY detail down to a fine point so to keep up suspense check out the reading and check back here for details.

		WORD Sculptors!!! We hope everything is going well with all of you oh there doing the day to day thing. Great reading this week , and several really funny poems came from last weeks "assignment"to write a poem about those little yellow thing that come out at easter PEEPS. So thanks to all for that. For those of you who don't know, to stimulate each others writing (lord knows writers block is a disease remedied only by stimulation and inspiration) we (anyone who is at the reading ) throw out writing topics and see where people take it, it's''s a lot of fun! Anyway we have some more challenges/assignments to give your writing a direction, Let's see what comes up this week!!! *TOPIC: SPRING* *Spring has Sprung!!!!* *and we are blooming into field of enchanting flowers, dead set on planting the world with love and peace and understanding. Or we are writing poems about spring!* *TOPIC:the future/Sci-Fi* *The future is now!!!!!!* *and we are intergalactic starfighters fighting for justice and the liberation of the human spirit!!! Or we're writing poems about the future and science fiction!* *for those of you who know.....* We create in the blank canvas of our minds, splash the paint of thought left to right, creating negative edges, and polorizing images to stimulate. Word Sculptures the title comes from the idea that we use different mediums in art, and our clay is emotion and experience, the intangible things, while our tools are ion this case our words, with which we communicate with each other. We are, to be as cliche as possible, an oasis in the middle of this vast expanse of wasteland we call VEGAS. Or at least it''s a platform for you, whoever you are, to share your experience, shout, wail, or rant with other people who really aren't all that different from one another as the man would like to make us all feel.
The point is that this is as much yours as it is anyones, so suggestions, direction, and ideas are encouraged.....we're under a corporate roof and maybe they're evilvampiric exploitative fascists or maybe just confused lonely wealthy people, either way they support what we're doing so let's focus on that for now as we grow.

The whole word shimmy shammy is astrally guided by the lovely Elizabeth Quinones and visuslly automated via Jeffrey Bennington Grindley.........We again will be looking forward to seeing you this Sunday as every Sunday, so bring your words to speak or just your ears to hear......and enjoy a cup of coffee or other caffeinated delights.
